Ontario International Airport had a record month in May.
Nearly 577,000 passengers passed through the airport last month, the most in any month since the airport was returned to local ownership in November 2016, according to a report released June 14.
That was a 7.3 percent increase overall compared with May 2022, including a four-percent increase in domestic traffic.
Previously, the highest passenger count for one month was October 2022, when airport accommodated 541,000 passengers.
During the first five months of 2023, Ontario International’s passenger count rose 13.2 percent, to a total of 2.4 million, year-over-year.
“Ontario continues to set an example in the aviation industry as an airport that has not only recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic but is setting record highs in passenger volume,” said Atif Elkadi, the Ontario International Airport Authority’s chief executive officer, in a statement.
Shipments of freight and mail totaled more than 61,000 tons, an 8.3 percent drop from May 2022. Year-to-date, cargo volume declined by 9.6 percent to 304,000 tons compared with the same period last year, according to the report.
