San Bernardino library reopens

State grant will help Riverside pay for library

Riverside has received $10 million from the California State Library that will help pay for a branch library.

The Spc. Jesus S. Duran Eastside Library, named for one of the city’s three Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, will be developed at Bobby Bonds Park, 2060 University Ave., according to a statement on the city’s website.

The funding is from the second round of the state library’s Building Forward Library Facilities Infrastructure Grant program which has given out $172 million to 34 libraries to help pay for maintenance.

The Duran Library will replace a branch library in a shopping center on Chicago Avenue south of University Avenue.

“The Spc. Jesus S. Duran Eastside Library will be a huge benefit for residents of the Eastside neighborhood,” said Mayor Pro Tem Erin Edwards in the statement. “This facility will be a welcome addition to a community gathering spot that already includes the park and the Cesar Chavez Community Center.”

The Duran Eastside Library, which is being designed, will cost about $20 million to build. The city is about $4.5 million short of that figure, according to the statement.

A construction schedule has not been announced.
