Palm Springs affordable housing project gets state grant

Palm Springs to fix streets

Palm Springs will spend $9 million paving streets this year, the most the city has ever spent on that annual project.

The city council approved the funding at its regular meeting Feb. 29, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Revenue for the 50-street project will come from Measure J, the one-cent sales tax approved by voters in 2011.

“This is fantastic news for our residents and neighborhoods,” said Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein,” who served as chair of the Measure J Commission. “This is the most money ever allocated for annual street paving, [and] it primarily comes from tourist dollars and not our residents. It’s a win-win.”

Measure J has helped pay for a number of capital improvement projects during the past 13 years, including the downtown revitalization, downtown park and the renovation of Welwood Murray Memorial Library.
