The Plaza Theatre in Palm Springs, which closed 11 years ago after it fell into disrepair, will reopen in December.
The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, which has led the effort to have the downtown landmark restored, made the opening date official in a statement posted June 17 on the city’s website.
It also announced that the theater at 128 S. Palm Canyon Drive will be equipped with an L-Acoustics sound system – the sound technology favored by most high-end venues – a 4K laser projector, 28-foot projection screen, and advance hearing loop technology for patrons who are hard of hearing.
“The Plaza Theatre will provide the best technology to enhance any show, whether the performer is a world-class star or a local non-profit with a small budget,” said J.R. Roberts, the foundation’s president, in the statement. “The Plaza Theatre will provide a ‘living room’ for all of Palm Springs, and we know that our local partners will benefit from the technology we are providing.”
Opened in 1936, the Plaza Theatre hosted film premieres and screenings, national radio broadcasts and other performances. Years later, it was home to the long-running show, The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies, according to the statement.
