Riverside to build library

Riverside will begin construction on the $21.5 million SPC Jesus S. Duran Eastside Library.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to be held from 10 am, to noon Sept. 6 at Bobby Bonds Park, 2060 University Ave., according to a statement on the city’s website.

Expected to open during the first half of 2027, the library will replace a storefront library in a shopping center at University and Chicago avenues.

Duran was a decorated Vietnam War veteran, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and a community advocate. He died in Riverside in 1977 and was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2014.

“This library will provide an unprecedented level of library services to the Eastside community,” Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson said in the statement. “It will be a fitting tribute to a man known for his community service and sacrifice for our country.”

The library will be built on the park’s east side, south of the parking lot at Douglas and University avenues, according to the statement.
