Apple Valley will keep its animal shelter.
The town council recently voted unanimously to not sell the facility to San Bernardino County, as had been proposed, according to a statement on the town’s website.
Keeping the shelter will allow Apple Valley to preserve programs, and partnerships designed to meet the specific needs of the High Desert town.
“We’re grateful to our residents for making their voices heard,” said Mayor Scott Nassif in the statement. “The Apple Valley Animal Shelter is more than a facility, it’s a community resource, and we’re committed to keeping it that way.”
The shelter at 22131 Powhatan Road serves Apple Valley and some parts of unincorporated San Bernardino County. Its services include dog licensing, microchip IDs and adoptions.
Friendly animals with no identification or license are kept at the shelter for as long as resources permit, according to the shelter’s page on the town’s website.

People who work at the front desk are so rude I wouldn’t adopt a animal they need fired as a lot of people feel the same way I do
Our County shelter has been under funded for years, and it shows.
Adding another city to an overwhelmed system would be a great dis service to the animals in Apple Valley and the residents.
Until cities and pet owners get serious about animal over population, there will never be enough room or resources to house all the unwanted animals. Affordable spay and neuter clinics are an investment into solving this problem..People need to understand that there will never be enough home for all of the unwanted cats and dogs born every year in this country. If you really are an animal lover, have your dogs and cats fixed. Be the solution, not part of the problem
