Inland Empire close to having its fourth minor league baseball team

Ontario baseball team to unveil name, mascot

Local baseball fans will soon learn the name of the Los Angeles Dodgers Single-A affiliate that will begin playing in Ontario next year.

The team’s name, mascot, and merchandise will be announced during a ceremony scheduled to be held Sept. 18 at the Ontario Town Square, according to a statement on Ontario’s website.

The team will play its home games in the Ontario Sports Empire, a 200-acre sports-entertainment complex under construction near Riverside Drive and Vineyard Avenue not far from the 60 Freeway.

When completed, the complex will include the 6,500-seat stadium the team will call home. It will also have baseball/softball fields, soccer fields, playgrounds, and an area for family activities.

“Ontario’s baseball roots run deep, from generations of local leagues to historic community ballfields, and the Sports Empire builds on that legacy,” City Manager Scott Ochoa said in the statement.  “It will be a place for families to gather, play, and compete.”

The soon-to-be-named franchise is the former Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

An Angels’ affiliate, the Inland Empire 66ers, will move from San Bernardino to Rancho Cucamonga and begin play in The Epicenter next spring, using the name Quakes.

A Seattle Mariners affiliate, the Modesto Nuts, will move to San Bernardino and play under the name Inland Empire 66ers.
