A $7.5 million upgrade of Palm Springs’ largest park is scheduled to begin March 2.
The Demuth Park Development Project will be conducted by the city’s Engineering Services Department and the Palm Springs Parks & Recreation Department, according to a statement on the city’s website.
The project, which has been in the works for five years, will be paid for with funds from water conservation grants, capital improvements funds, Quimby, and Measure J.
Quimby funds are state revenue generated by the 1975 Quimby Act. It’s given to cities and counties for parks and recreation project. Measure J was a one-cent sales tax approved by Palm Springs voters in 2011 to maintain community services and pay for improvements to downtown.
Upgrades to the 61-acre park at 4365 E. Mesquite Ave. will include the building of a large dog park, a smaller dog park, conversion of a 2.2-acre dirt lot into a 165-space parking lot, paving of the community center parking lot, and restoration of sidewalks and pathways.
A groundbreaking date has not been announced. Work is expected to be completed in October.
