Homeless Crisis in Riverside

San Bernardino County buys land for homeless shelter

San Bernardino County will develop a navigation center in Fontana to assist homeless people.

The board of supervisors on March 10 agreed to buy property at 11109 Jasmine St., and convert a vacant warehouse there into a 200-bed shelter, according to a statement on the county’s website.

A navigation center helps people move from living on the street to permanent housing.

“The board’s action on this agenda item moves us closer to opening a navigation center that will provide critical support for people experiencing homelessness,” said Supervisor Dawn Rowe in the statement. “It will connect individuals to the resources they need to gain stability and thrive.”

Cost of the property is $11.6 million, not counting the renovation and other expenses. The facility is expected to be ready in early 2027.

Chino, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto and Upland will help pay for start-up costs and yearly operating expenses, according to the statement.

The facility will serve only individuals referred to it by the county. It will offer behavioral health services, medical care, case management, transportation assistance and housing placement, according to the statement.
