Opponents of a proposed high-voltage transmission line that would cut through Temecula will hold a protest rally July 31.
Save Temecula is scheduled to gather from 4 to 6 p.m. at Temecula Duck Pond, 28250 Ynez Road, to protest San Diego Gas & Electric’s 144-mile Golden Pacific Powerlink, according to a statement.
SDG&E wants to string 500-kV overhead lines between towers as high as 200 feet. Those towers would move power between the Imperial Valley, San Diego County, and the Los Angeles Basin, according to SDG&E.
Opponent say the project would damage, if not destroy, Temecula’s character and ambiance, especially where it crosses one of the city’s wineries.
“This isn’t just a power line, it’s unprecedented industrial infrastructure,” said Shal Renfro, chief marketing and communications officer for Save Temecula, in the the statement. “It poses an existential threat to every family, home, business, and vineyard in Temecula.
Several hundred people are expected to attend the rally. The California Public Utilities Commission will decide if the project will be built as planned.
