The cost of going to school in the University of California system might become more expensive.
Tuition at the state’s 10 UC campuses would go as much as five percent during each of the next five years under a plan being proposed by UC President Janet Napolitano, according to multiple reports.
That proposal would raise the annual cost of a UC education from $12,292 to $12,804 next fall and up to $15,564 by the fall of 2019. Napolitano was expected to present the plan to UC’s governing board this week.
The proposed hikes, which would apply to California residents seeking undergraduate or graduate degrees in academic disciplines, come after three years in which tuition rates have not gone up.
Napolitano, who took office last year, wants to make modest tuition hikes a regular part of the UC budget process so that students, faculty and administration won’t be caught off guard and can plan accordingly.
