Inland water district clamps down

Residents of southwest Riverside County are now on a strict water diet.

Starting yesterday, the Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District began implementing mandatory Stage4a water restrictions, the first time since the district was formed in the 1950s that has placed such tight limits on water use, according to a report in The Press- Enterprise.

Sprinkler use will be limited to two days a week from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Properties with odd-numbered addresses will be allowed to water on Mondays and Thursdays, even-numbered addresses on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The district will also prohibit washing down driveways and sidewalks, automobile washing at home and any irrigation runoff. Watering will be prohibited on windy days and within 48 hours of a rainstorm.

Also, restaurants will only serve water on request. Violators will be warned twice before being fined.

The Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District serves communities along the Interstate 15 corridor, including Lake Elsinore, Wildomar and Canyon Lake. It is trying to cut its water use by 28 percent, the report stated.
