High Desert Lands Minor League Baseball Team

High Desert baseball fans will have a minor league baseball team to watch next season.

The High Desert Yardbirds of the Houston-based Pecos League of Professional Baseball Clubs will begin playing next May at Adelanto Stadium, according to statement released by the league.

The Yardbirds, an independent team, will play a 50-game schedule as part of the league’s Pacific Division, said Geoff Hinds, chief executive office of the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds in Victorville.

The fairgrounds, which will be in charge of stadium maintenance and non-baseball entertainment, and the city of Adelanto partnered to bring the newly-formed Yardbirds to the High Desert.

The deal took about three months to put together. It calls for both parties to receive an undisclosed percentage of any revenue generated by the ball club, Hinds said.

The Yardbirds will replace the Class A High Desert Mavericks, who were disbanded after the 2016 season. The Mavericks and the city were unable to resolved lease and other issues regarding the stadium, which is owned by the city.
