Palm Springs enforces vacation rental restrictions

Palm Springs has issued 185 citations for violations of its Vacation Rental Ordinance since the start of this year, including eight suspensions of rental permits and six that are being permanently revoked, according to a statement.

The ordinance, which the city council approved in March after numerous complaints from residents, places strict limits on how many times, and for how long, a residence can be made available to renters.

So far this year, 16 citations have been issued for unregistered properties, which carries a minimum $5,000 fine and can result in a permanent ban on operating a rental property.

Palm Springs has approximately 2,100 registered and permitted vacation rentals, the vast majority of which are in full compliance with the ordinance, according to the statement.

The city has scheduled a special meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Palm Springs Convention Center, 277 N. Avenida Caballeros. Members of the public will be able to discuss how the ordinance is working.
