Alexis King, an English teacher at Ayala High School in Chino Hills, has received a 2017 Milken Educator Award.
The award, which is considered the nation’s preeminent teacher recognition honor, includes a $25,000 check that King may spend however she wishes, according to a statement released by the Chino Valley Unified School District.
King was recognized Tuesday during an assembly in the school’s gym attended by about 2,700 people. The event was attended by Tom Torlakson, state superintendent of public instruction.
Up to 45 teachers nationwide are expected to win a Milken Award this year. The program was founded in 1982 by Michael and Lowell Milken and today is sponsored by the Milken Family Foundation.
Ayala, who is from a family of teachers, was one of four San Bernardino County Teachers of the Year in 2016. She was recognized by the foundation for her “high achievement level’’ as an instructor, according to the statement.
