Arellano named SB school district superintendent

Mauricio Arellano has been appointed superintendent of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.

The board of education gave Arellano – currently head of the Redlands Unified School District- a unanimous vote approval at its Feb. 7 meeting, according to a statement on the district’s website.

Arellano is scheduled to begin work April 17. Various administrators will serve as temporary superintendent until Arellano takes over.

Dozens of candidates applied for the position following a nationwide search.

“Your board of education sought to hire the best leader for SBCUSD, and we found him,” said Scott Wyatt, board president, in the statement. “Mauricio Arellano embodies everything our community asked us to find in a Superintendent. We can expect him to be inclusive, innovative and, most of all, effective.”

Arellano grew up in San Bernardino, attended district schools and graduated from San Bernardino High School. He started his education career as a bilingual elementary school teacher in 1991, according to the statement.
