Chaffey College to build welding training facility

Chaffey College will build a $2.9 million welding training facility at its Industrial Technical Learning Center in Fontana.

The facility, expected to begin construction next year, will allow the school to help fill one of the fastest-growing occupations in the Inland Empire, according to a statement on the school’s website.

Funding was arranged by Assemblyman Freddie Rodriguez, D-Pomona. The operation will provide low-cost training for residents, including unemployed, underemployed, low-income, women and veterans.

“Experienced welders have the potential to earn $40 per hour, but training costs often serve as a deterrent because they can be expensive,” said Chaffey College Superintendent/President Henry Shannon in the statement, “We want to tear down this educational barrier for our residents and give them an opportunity to improve their lives, while also providing skilled workers for our employers.”

Welding jobs in the two-county region are expected to increase by 10 percent next year, according to the statement.
