A program at Cal San Bernardino’s Palm Desert campus that provides medical help to the underserved has received a $100,000 grant.
The donation from The Houston Family Foundation will help the Nursing Street Medicine Program increase its care to shelter and unsheltered individuals in the Coachella Valley, according to a statement on the university’s website.
The grant will serve 700 individuals and 1,200 annual patient contacts, while helping establish three clinics and train 35 nursing students every year.
It will also help expand the program’s behavioral health services, according to the statement.
“We are honored by the Houston Family Foundation’s generosity,” said Diane Vines, one of the program’s nursing instructors, in the statement. “This funding strengthens our ability to bring healthcare directly to people, while empowering our nursing students to practice community service.”
The program, which uses nursing clinics and outreach programs to provide its services, was established in 2019. It addresses healthcare disparities by meeting patients where they live, according to the statement.
