San Bernardino receives federal transportation grant

Federal grant will aid desert EV charging facility

Blythe has received a $19 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation that will pay for an electric vehicle charging station.

The WattEV Electric Vehicle Charging Station will be developed alongside Interstate 10 and will assist people traveling between Phoenix and Los Angeles, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“Blythe is driving the transition to clean transportation,” said Interim City Manager Mallory Crecelius in the statement regarding the partnership between the High Desert city and  WattEV,  a Long Beach-based company that is developing  a nationwide network of charging stations. “This positions Blythe as a leader in the clean energy initiatives, and it will help attract more opportunities for sustainable development and innovation, fostering economic growth for our future.”

The charging station will include solar and battery storage systems for trucks and regular passenger vehicles, catering to both trucks and private passenger vehicles.

The project’s site plan has been approved, and it has passed its California Environmental Quality Act review. A construction schedule has not been released.
