Fontana gets new fire station

New fire station for Morongo tribe

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians has opened a fire station that will serve the Morongo Indian Reservation and much of the San Gorgonio Pass.

The 15,000-square-foot facility at Morongo and Santiago roads replaces the building that housed the tribe’s fire department since 1998, according to a tribal statement.

“Public safety has always been a top priority for our tribe, and our new fire station will further strengthen the Morongo Fire Department’s mission to protect lives and property on our reservation and across the Pass,” said Charles Martin, Morongo tribal chairman, in the statement.
The building will support up to 12 people during one shift. It includes living quarters, dual apparatus bays, and an earthquake detection system. During an emergency, the station will be able to provide residents with a place to stay.

Started in the 1950s as a volunteer department, the Morongo Fire Department today is a full-service agency with nearly 50 full-time professional firefighters, according to the statement.
