Ontario International Airport has unveiled a monument sign at Archibald Avenue and Airport Drive, part of the airport’s year-long commemoration of local ownership.
The sign consists of ONT in large letters backed by sculpted mountain shapes based on the San Gabriel Mountains, according to a statement on the airport’s website.
The structure was revealed during a ceremony Jan. 21. It replaces a sign, described in the statement as “narrow” and understated,” that has greeted travelers at Ontario International since 1998.
“For nearly three decades, our gateway sign quietly faded into the background,” said Alan D. Wapner, president of the Ontario International Airport Authority (OIAA) board of commissioners, in the statement. “Today, we unveil a monument that declares who we are and where we are headed.”
The eight-ton edifice is about 12 feet tall, with each letter made of sheet metal. It is about 60 feet long and is lit up at night. It was designed and put together by Sign industries in Ontario, according to the statement.
