ONT passenger traffic nears pre-pandemic level

Passenger traffic at Ontario International Airport grew by 123 percent year-over-year in January, according to data released Tuesday.

The airport accommodated 339,736 air travelers during the first month of 2022, nearly 86 percent of its passenger count in January 2019, before the pandemic hit, the Ontario International Airport Authority reported.

Domestic passengers totaled 323,251, while international travelers tallied 16,485. Those were year-over-year increases of 122 percent 154 percent, respectively.

“Ontario International remains an appealing airport for airlines and air travelers” said Jim W. Bowman, commissioner of the airport authority board, in the statement. “The board is optimistic about the airport’s outlook for the coming months, based on current airline schedules and the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.”

Air cargo totaled more than 68,585 tons in January, a seven percent drop from one year earlier despite a 40 percent increase in mail, according to the statement.
