Palm Springs convention center to get makeover

Palm Springs is taking the first steps in a $125 million renovation and expansion of its convention center.

The city has put out requests for qualifications for architectural and engineering services, and for an owner’s representative for the project, both milestones in getting the project started, according to a statement on the city’s website.

A request for design plans will be offered later this month. The project is expected to be carried out in four phases.

Built in 1984 and expanded in 2005, the Palm Spring Convention Center at 277 N. Avenida Caballeros is a major factor in Palm Springs’ tourist-oriented economy.

Renovation of the 245,000-square-foot facility will include upgrading meeting spaces, making the structure more durable, and creating easier access between the convention center, downtown Palm Springs and nearby neighborhoods.

“These enhancements will create a more accessible environment for residents, visitors, and convention-goers,” the statement reads.

Palm Springs is considering several ways to pay for the project, including a citywide tourism infrastructure district, according to the statement.
