Greg McNiff has been promoted to president and chief executive officer of Stater Bros. Markets, Inc.
McNiff will replace Pete Van Helden, who has held both of those positions since 2016, according to a statement on the company’s website.
Van Helden will take over as executive chairman of the board. Both appointments will take effect Sept. 29.
All department heads will report to McNiff, who is currently the company’s president and chief operating officer.
McNiff began working in the supermarket industry in 1981, as a courtesy clerk with Albertsons. In 2019, McNiff joined Stater Bros. as its president, and three years later was given the chief operating officer title.
“I’ve worked with Greg for many years,” Van Helden said in the statement.” Due to his industry knowledge, and fit in Stater Bros.’ culture, I can’t think of a better leader for the company’s day-to-day operations.”
Based in San Bernardino, Stater Bros. operates nearly 170 stores throughout Southern California and employs an estimated 18,000 people, according to the statement.
