Following a brief break, “Professionals of the Inland Empire (PIE) podcast is resuming for season two.
John Tulac, international business attorney located in Claremont, brings on attorneys, accountants, bankers, business consultants, and marketing professionals to share their expert advice on policies and politics that influence business operational environments.
Beginning this season, “Professionals in Enterprise,” will feature guests from outside the Inland Empire and focuse specifically on matters impacting business, as well as how business owners and the professionals serving them can navigate these challenges.
Tulac emphasizes a foundational education and career philosophy centered around being a “lifelong student,” which entails maintaining a constant habit of reading and keeping up with world events. He has served as adjunct faculty at Cal Poly Pomona and has taught at several other law schools in Southern California throughout his career. Regarding the distinction between the rule of law and rule by law, John explains that the Rule of Law is a system where precedents are followed and judicial decisions are respected, ensuring stability without being vulnerable to disturbances from mobs or transient political shifts. In contrast, the Rule by Law is defined as arbitrary and capricious, often seen in countries where the law lacks reliability and is manipulated as a tool for the ruling power rather than serving as a fixed standard.
The 21st century has been marked by significant political instability, characterized by “wild swings” in policies regardless of whether a Democrat or a Republican is in office.
The Trump Administration enacted tariffs beginning from the first day of his presidency, though many have been struck down, paused, or eliminated. Nonetheless, they have consistently been replaced by other tariffs, including notable tariffs of 25% for steel and aluminum. This rises as a significant hurdle impacting businesses. The consequences for business include higher costs for component parts and finished products, international sales affected by the risk of retaliatory tariffs from other countries, increased domestic pricing that may push businesses out of their markets, and a regulatory surge, with Tulac noting an unprecedented rise in inquiries about tariffs.
Tulac advocates for transparency with customers regarding price increases driven by government actions, promoting honesty to build loyalty and trust. He recommends outreach to media outlets, such as writing letters to local newspapers to increase awareness of adverse policies.
