Stater Bros. Believe Walk will again be virtual

Stater Bros. lays off clerks

Stater Bros. has laid off 63 courtesy clerks, citing rampant inflation and tariffs against Canada and Mexico proposed by President Trump.

That is the first move of its kind in 89-year history of the San Bernardino-based supermarket chain, according to multiple reports.

The clerks reportedly learned of their fate in a video last month, in which Chief Executive Officer Pete Van Helden spoke about the need for the chain, which operates 171 stores throughout Southern California, to cut costs.

Courtesy clerks are reportedly paid about $16.50 an hour. They bag groceries, load items into cars and maintain check stands.

Some of the layoffs happened at two Inland Empire stores: 22201 Barton Road in Grand Terrace and 3460 Ontario Ranch Road in Ontario, according to the reports.

  1. Do the math: one employee out of every 2.71 stores. Sounds a lot worse than it is. Spin City again…

  2. I am sure it doesn’t have anything to do with the money they are shelling out to remodel all their stores. Don’t get me wrong, I have shopped at Staters for most of my life.

  3. Well that will show ‘um. Stupid. Boycotts now for Stater Bros stores since they support Canada and Mexico over America.

  4. Jack Brown is turning in his grave!

  5. I stopped shopping at Stater Brothers years ago. Their prices are outrageous. It doesn’t have that family-owned feel any longer. I’m now Amazon Fresh and winco. Won’t affect me whatsoever

    • Always blame it on Trump their no5 hurting for money their opening new stores all the time it could be a big possibilities that the high cost of groceries (which started way before Trump got into office ) starting with the most recent bs with the egg situation the bird flu so I was getting my eggs at an actual chicken ranch prior to this bird flu bs I was paying $12 for two flats of jumbo eggs I would walk into the lobby where the refrigerators were always full of every size and kind of eggs now I go in I’m paid $35.00 for two flats of not jumbo but x-large the refrigerators are bare and there selling faster than the chickens can lay so tell me full refrigerators $6 a flat vs empty refrigerators 17.50 a flat the chickens aren’t sick no bird flu refrigerators are empty due to extreme sales this is a single family owned farm they sell right from the chickens asses on their property they are making more money by selling more eggs than their normal there not buying from another source where they are reselling to cover their costs they are simply riding the coat tails of a situation that is non existent to them taking advantage os everyone it’s a shame I will not buy from them anymore

    • I love Stater Bros and worked as a clerk last year, it’s hard work for such little pay. Was paid 16.10 an hour, so now the lines will be longer and someone has to get those carts. So sad, and yes they are expensive but their deli is awesome.

  6. Everyone wants to blame Trump and problem was there before he took office. Staters needs to go back being a supermarket not a club they try to force people to buy in order to get a better deal instead of providing overall lower prices, they weathered the storms in the past without all this bs so go back to being the old good supermarket. I shop elsewhere in the last 2 years because of them trying to be club store!!!

  7. Good! Some of those courtesy clerks look like tweekers. Who hired them?

  8. Their prices SOOO high That’s why. I live between Winco and Stater Bros Marfkets the sifference is shocking
