Top candidate for San Bernardino city manager post says no

San Bernardino is apparently back to square one in its search for a full-time city manager.

The top candidate for the job has turned down San Bernardino’s offer and will remain with his employer, according to a statement on the city’s website.

“While it is rare for a candidate to withdraw from consideration after an announcement is made, it is always a possibility,” the statement reads.

During its Sept. 6 council meeting, the council announced it had offered the city manager position to someone, but it did not say who it was or where the person worked.

Mayor Helen Tran and city council discussed the matter in a closed session Oct. 4.

“[The council] remains confident that it will attract and hire the right person to manage the city,” the statement reads.

Charles McNeely will remain as interim city manager while the city tries to find a candidate.
