Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday Morning at 9:30 on AM590

Tune in to The Main Event this Saturday morning at 9:30 on AM590 with host Ed Hoffman as he discusses national current events and politics, with a few mortgage tips along the way. Ed delivers intelligent, entertaining radio that makes hard news easy to understand!

This week, Ed begins the show with a recap of the Supreme Court end-of-term decisions for the year. It begins with a discussion on King vs. Burrell, a key ruling for Obamacare that the court ruled on Thursday. The ruling holds that the Affordable Care Act authorized federal tax credits for eligible Americans living not only in states with their own exchanges, but also in the 34 states with federal marketplaces. Because of the court’s decision, Americans who have Obamacare in a federal exchange rather than a state marketplace are still entitled to subsidies – even though the Affordable Care Act explicitly states that tax credits are only to be distributed for marketplaces “established by the state.” Ed discusses Chief Justice John Roberts’ official opinion on the ruling, in which he states that, “If possible, we must interpret the Act in a way that is consistent with the former, and avoids the latter.”

Ed believes that remark to be wholly inconsistent with Roberts’ dissent statement on the court’s gay marriage decision on Friday, in which Roberts made it clear that personal opinions on the issue should not considered when interpreting the law. “Wait a minute – what were you saying yesterday?” Ed asks. He does agree with both Roberts’ and Justice Antonin Scalia’s dissent statements, however, and reads some of their key portions for the benefit of listeners. If you want to be brought up to speed on the Supreme Court decisions this week and you want to hear opinions on both sides, tune in to The Main Event!

Next it’s on to a discussion on last week’s tragic shooting in South Carolina, where nine black churchgoers were killed by a young white supremacist who had posed with the Confederate flag in photos published online. There are now calls from national leaders on both the right and the left to stop flying the Confederate flag on public property, and Republican South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley called for the flag to be removed from the lawn of her state Capitol building. Following that action, numerous retailers have begun banning the sales of Confederate flag merchandise, including Walmart, Amazon and eBay.

Ed states that like many Americans, he sees no real symbolism in the Confederate flag today. “I don’t know that I have an opinion,” he says – but he plays audio of Nation of Islam leader and notorious head of the Black Muslim movement, Louis Farrakhan, calling for the banning of the American flag itself. As a result, some argue that banning the Confederate flag is a slippery slope; if you want to hear the arguments, tune in to The Main Event this weekend. You’ll also hear an update on Traci Johnson, the Oklahoma food processing plant worker who was almost beheaded in a racially motivated attack by a Muslim co-worker. Ed plays Ms. Johnson’s never-before-heard revelation on what attacker Alton Nolen said to her that day, and then questions why the media reported the attack as “workplace violence” rather than a hate crime or act of terror.

On this week’s show, you’ll also hear about:

The undocumented immigrant who heckled Obama at a White House LGBT event – “How did an illegal immigrant make it into the White House?” Ed asks.
Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal announcing his candidacy for President – he’s the 14th Republican to enter the race!
Ed’s Push-Ups for Charity event at Wholesale Capital Corporation in Moreno Valley on July 25 – contact Michelle Evans at (951) 488-3111 to participate or donate!
