UCR to offer robotics degree

Starting this fall, UC Riverside will become the first University of California institution to offer a master’s degree in robotics.

The program will teach the design, construction, and deployment of robots and autonomous systems, disciplines that can be applied to manufacturing, logistics, health care, public safety, and the military, according to a statement on the school’s website.

The program will bring robotics courses now taught in different departments under one roof. Areas of interest will include artificial intelligence, specifically how robots will be programmed to perceive their surroundings and make decisions. It will also study how “biased robots” might be harmful to society as robotic technology evolves.

Amit Roy Chowdhury, professor of electrical and computer engineering, will chair the robotics degree program starting July 1. It will be managed by the computer science-engineering, electrical-computer engineering, and mechanical engineering departments.

Applications for fall admission are due July 15 for international students and Sept. 1 for domestic students.
