UC Riverside is pretty popular these days.
The university will welcome 71,069 first-year and transfer students at the start of the upcoming fall semester, by far the most in its 71-year history, according to a statement on the school’s website.
The previous record was set one year ago, when 51,345 students began classes.
“Offering admission to more students this year reflects our commitment to expanding opportunities for students,” said Veronica Zendejas, undergraduate admissions director, in the statement. “We’re growing with new programs, expanded housing, and investments.”
UC Riverside enrolled the most first-year students, of any University of California campus – 61,718, far surpassing its first-year admits – 44,328 – last year. It also led the UC campuses in admitting California students, with 53,379.
The UC system, which has nine undergraduate campuses, will welcome 149,368 first-year students this fall statewide according to the statement.
The UC Riverside Choice Program, a new initiative in which applicants who have applied to other UC campuses are given extra time to apply to UC Riverside, helped boost the school’s fall enrollment, according to the statement.
