Bill extends ban on pandemic evictions

A ban on local and regional governments in California passing eviction standards related to COVID-19 has been extended.

The ban, which was set to expire March 31, will now run to July 1, according to a statement.

Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis signed AB 2179 into law in her capacity as acting governor while Gov. Gavin Newsom was out of state. The bill, which contains other provisions, was passed in order to prevent several jurisdictions from passing “onerous” eviction guidelines by April 1.

Also, under AB 2179, California’s statewide emergency eviction protections are now limited to applications for rent relief that were submitted on or before March 31, 2022. Those protections will expire on June 30 of this year according to the statement.
