Improvements to Thousand Palms Canyon Road to begin

Riverside County has approved major upgrades to a 4.2-mile stretch of Thousand Palms Canyon Road.

Work will include resurfacing, building five‑foot‑wide paved shoulders for bicyclists, and installing a pair of turn pockets that will make it easier to access the Coachella Valley Preserve, according to a statement on the county’s website.

The cost of the project, which the board of supervisors approve recently, is estimated at $4.8 million. Work is expected to be completed by the end of summer.

“I am glad we are nearing construction for the resurfacing and widening of Thousand Palms Canyon Road, a beautiful drive from Thousand Palms to our unincorporated communities in the northern part of the valley,” said Supervisor V. Manuel Perez in the statement. “This will make travel much smoother and safer for our residents, visitors to the Oasis Preserve, and bicyclists, who will have a widened shoulder to use.”

Construction will be done in phases to keep the road open as much as possible.

The project is being paid for with funds generated by gas taxes and vehicle registration fees, according to the statement.
