Riverside County’s homeless population rose 12 percent during the past year, a report has found.
A total of 3,725 people were identified as homeless in the January 25 Point In Time Count, up from 3,336 homeless residents in 2022, according to data released on May 9 by the county’s Department of Housing and Workforce Solutions.
The number of people living on the street – 2,441 – represented a 23 percent year-over-year increase, while the number of people living in shelters – 1,284 – was a four percent decline.
The number of homeless veterans rose 31 percent between 2022 and 2023, homeless families with children went up 12 percent and seniors with no permanent place to live went up six percent.
One piece of good news: the number of homeless between the ages of 18 and 24 dropped by 27 percent.
The board of supervisors was expected to receive the report during its May 9 meeting.
San Bernardino County reported a 26 percent increase in its homeless count this year.
The annual Point In Time Count, which is conducted on one night every January, is conducted by local government agencies on behalf of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
