Long-anticipated bridge rebuild to start this year

Construction on the Ramon Road Bridge Project is scheduled to begin this fall.

The bridge, which connects Palm Springs and Cathedral City, handles about 40,000 vehicles a day while providing access to Palm Spring International Airport, according to a statement on Palm Springs’ website.

The east-west bridge was built in 1982 and refurbished in 2000, but it no longer meets seismic standards and experiences heavy traffic during rush hour.

Improvements will include widening the bridge from four lanes to six, seismic and flood-prevention upgrades, new sidewalks, and a bicycle lane.

“The Ramon Road Bridge Project is a major investment in the long-term safety, mobility and economic sustainability of the region,” said Palm Springs Mayor Naomi Soto in the statement.

Palm Springs, Cathedral City, and the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians will be in charge of the reconstruction. It is expected to cost between $35 million and $45 million and be completed during the fourth quarter of 2028, according to one estimate.

An exact start date has not been announced.
