SolarMax LED has signed a $4 million contract with the California Department of Transportation to replace more than 29,000 aging street lights.
The agreement calls for SolarMax LED to start work in Sacramento County with its energy-efficient LED bulbs, according to a statement released Tuesday.
Riverside-based SolarMax LED and Caltrans are still working out details of the contract, but work is expected to begin by the end of summer.
GE Lighting and Philips Lighting, which is part of Royal Philips, the global technology company based in Amsterdam were among the nine companies that bid on the contract. The bidders saw the contract, which could be extended beyond Sacramento County, as a way to showcase their latest energy-saving technology, according to the statement.
“The caliber of companies competing for this opportunity speaks volumes about its significance to advancing energy conservation,” said Ching Liu, Solar Max Technology’s executive vice president, in the statement.
Liu also called Caltrans “the gold standard” for providing lighting for public highways.
SolarMax LED is part of Solar Max Technology, which was founded in 2008. It specializes in energy-efficient and renewable lighting for commercial and residential uses, and has installed more than 5,500 systems, according to the statement.
