City Manager steps down

Upland is looking for a city manager.

Incumbent Stephen Dunn announced at Tuesday’s council meeting that he will retire effective June 30, according to a report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

Dunn was hired in 2011 after serving as interim city manager and finance director, and things went well at first. The City Council voted unanimously in 2012 to renew his contract for three years at $225,000 a year.

But disagreements between Dunn and the council intensified earlier this year regarding the organization of town hall meetings. Also, last November, the council formed a 10-member task force to try and find ways to keep the city out of bankruptcy, rather than take Dunn’s recommendations to reach that goal.

Ultimately, the group backed Dunn’s suggestions, according to the report.

Dunn is an Upland resident. He has worked in city government for nearly 30 years, including stints in Buena Park in Orange County and Fontana, according to the report.
