City says no more medical benefits for elected officials

Upland has agreed to end all healthcare benefits for its elected officials.

The move, which the city council approved Monday, will save the Upland about $103,000 a year, according to a report first published in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin.

Council members will lose their benefits after the election this November; benefits for the city treasurer will go away in 2016.

The vote was 4-0, with Mayor Ray Musser declining to vote, according to the report.

In January, the Upland Fiscal Task Force made 47 recommendations to the council that are designed to cut spending and allow the city to get its finances in order. One of those recommendations was eliminating medical benefits to the city’s elected officials.

Ultimately, the task force wants to save Upland’s general fund $7 million.

Elected officials may still receive healthcare coverage through the city, but they will have to pay all premiums themselves, according to the report.
