Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert campus has set up a chapter of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Fellows Program, one of four chapters in the country and the only one in California.
The program named for the 38th president of the United States promotes civic engagement, ethical leadership and public service, according to a statement on the university’s website.
It also allows students to develop their leadership skills and develop relationships with local and national leaders.
Students can become fellows through a rigorous, multi-stage selection process designed to identify individuals who exemplify the values of civic responsibility, ethical leadership and public service.
“This is a historic moment for the Palm Desert Campus and for the entire Cal State system,” said Kevin Grisham, professor of global studies and the program’s faculty advisor, in the statement. “Becoming the only California chapter of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Fellows Program underscores our commitment to preparing the next generation of ethical leaders and engaged citizens.”
Other chapters are at the University of Michigan, Ford’s alma mater, Hope College in Michigan and Middle Tennessee State University.
