Moreno Valley, school district form partnership

Moreno Valley and the Moreno Valley Unified School District have established a joint program designed to help special needs students.

The Mayor’s Apprenticeship Program Promoting Employment Development will allow students to gain work experience, according to a statement on the city’s website.

The agreement, the first of its kind between the city and the school district, was signed Tuesday by Mayor Yxstian Gutierrez and Susan Smith, president of the Moreno Valley Unified School Board.

Scheduled to launch this fall, the 12-week program will provide high school students of all abilities with support, training, and work experience that will help them find a job after they’ve graduated high school.

To qualify, students must have “mild to moderate” special needs, be English learners and come from a lower-income family, according to the statement.
