OIA Sees Large Drop in Traffic

Passenger traffic at Ontario International Airport dropped substantially in July.

Overall traffic was down 4.49 percent last month, with nearly 17,300 fewer domestic and international passengers using the airport compared with July 2015, according to data released Tuesday by Los Angeles World Airports, the airport’s owner.

Domestic traffic fell by 11,875 passengers year-over-year, a drop of 3.4 percent, while International traffic – which consists of AeroMexico and Volaris – fell by 4,614 passengers during that time, a decline of 24.2 percent, LAWA reported.

The data caught airport officials off guard.

“I was surprised by the drop,” said Tim Ihle, airport manager. “I knew we had a slight decline last month, but I never expected such a large drop this month, and I don’t have an explanation. We’re trying to figure it out. I don’t want to speculate.”

Forty five thousand six hundred and thirty five tons of cargo – mail and freight – was handled at OIA during July, a year-over-year increase of 5.9 percent, according to the data.
