Palm Springs throws renters affected by COVID-19 a lifeline

Palm Springs has placed a moratorium on evicting renters who can’t pay their rent because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Council members last week unanimously approved the suspension, which applies to residential and commercial tenants and will remain in place until the crisis is over, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Residential rent deferral is allowed if a tenant can’t pay all or part of their rent because of COVID-19, and if the tenant notifies the landlord of that fact within 15 days of the rent being due. If requested, the tenant must provide documentation.

Guideline regarding commercial rent deferral are the same, except the tenant has only seven days after the rental due date to tell their landlord they can’t make the payment.

Tenants will have up to 180 days after the COVID-19 emergency is over to pay back deferred rent. The moratorium is effective immediately, according to the statement.
