San Bernardino’s homeless population drops

San Bernardino is celebrating a substantial drop in its homeless population.

The number of homeless living in the city fell 23.6 percent between 2026 and 2025, from 1,535 to 1,172, according to a statement on the city’s website.

Those numbers are based on San Bernardino’s 2026 Point-In-Time Count, which staff conducted Jan. 22.

“Homelessness is the number one issue for our residents,” said council member Fred Shorett in the statement. “We are pleased that our efforts have moved the numbers in the right direction.”

During the past few years, San Bernardino has doubled down on its efforts reduce its homeless population, including increasing the number of shelter beds available from about 420 to the nearly 900 it has now.

The city has also increased its rapid rehousing programs, hired more case managers, and used state grants to reduce homelessness in key corridors, including Waterman Avenue, according to the statement.
