Norco has approved funding for a memorial plaza that will honor city residents who were killed in action.
The George Ingalls Veterans Memorial Plaza will be built at the equestrian center that already bears Ingalls’ name, according to a report originally published in The Press-Enterprise.
In a 5-0 vote Wednesday, the council awarded a contract worth nearly $500,000 to Act 1 Construction in Norco. The project will be paid for with bond proceeds issued by Norco’s former redevelopment agency, and some fundraising, according to the report.
Construction is expected to begin in two weeks.
No one spoke against the funding, despite rumors that some residents might oppose using former redevelopment funds to pay for the project.
Ingalls, a graduate of Norco High School, was 21 years old when he threw himself on a live grenade in order to protect his fellow soldiers. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
About 100 people attended the council meeting, including a group of Vietnam veterans. The council’s vote came 47 years to the day – April 16, 1967 – that Ingalls died, according to the report.
