Tribe makes donation to help fire victims

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross to help victims of the Los Angeles fires.

“The Tribe extends its deep appreciation to the American Red Cross for its tireless efforts to support people impacted by these devastating fires,” Tribal Chairman Reid D. Milanovich said in a statement on the tribe’s website. “Right now, many are struggling and we know the Red Cross is there to help.”

At least 27 people were killed in the fires that began Jan. 7. Fueled by high winds, the Pacific Palisades and Eaton fires burned more than 23,000 acres and damaged or destroyed more than 7,400 structures, according to reports.

Additional fires – Lidia, Archer, Woodley, Sunset, Kenneth, Hurst and Auto – broke out later and were contained by Jan. 17, the reports stated.

The latest fire, near Castaic Lake in northern Los Angeles County, started early Jan. 22 and had forced the evacuation of more 31,000 people by nightfall, according to reports.
