An Upland shopping center is about to get a makeover.
Upland Village Center at 229 E. Foothill Blvd. is being purchased by Yavitz Cos. Inc. in Seal Beach, City Manager Rod Butler said.
Once that process is complete, the developer plans to renovate four buildings at the complex and demolish two others. The latter are near each other at the front of the property – one used to to be a Sizzler steak restaurant that dated back to at least the mid-1970s – and both will probably be replaced with restaurants, Butler said.
A 99 Cents Only, Laser Island, H. Salt Fish & Chips and a bicycle shop are all doing business at Upland Village Center, which is just east of Euclid Avenue. The 99 Cents Store might be the only one of the four businesses that remains open during the renovation, Butler said.
“This is a very important retail property for the city,” Butler said. “It’s part of the Foothill Boulevard corridor, and we’re always excited about improving anything along that route. It’s also an ideal retail location, being so close to Euclid Avenue.”
Escrow on the property is expected to close in the next 30 to 45 days. No schedule for the renovation has been set, and cost of the project has not been announced.
Upland Village Center is expected to generate between $300,000 and $500,000 a year in sales and property tax revenue after it’s renovated, Butler said.
