City gets $35 million to help homeless

San Bernardino has received a $35 million state grant that will pay for temporary housing for the chronically homeless.

The money, from the Department of Housing and Community Development, will finance construction of a facility next to the Lutheran Social Services’ San Bernardino campus at 1354 N. G St., according to a statement on the city’s website.

It is the largest grant in the department’s current cycle of Project Homekey funding, and is believed to be the largest competitive grant San Bernardino has ever received.

“This is a big win for San Bernardino,” City Manager Charles Montoya said in the statement. “It allows us to continue making strides to address homelessness in the city and provide essential support to our homeless population.”

The 140-unit San Bernardino Community Wellness Center will serve chronically homeless men who will be allowed to stay there for 180 days.

The project is expected to be completed in 2025. It will include a federally-approved health clinic and will provide case management, according to the statement.
