County to get new communications center

San Bernardino County has broken ground on a communications center that will coordinate responses to emergencies and disasters.

The 76,000-square foot Valley Communications Center will house dispatch centers for the sheriff’s department, fire agencies and the Office of Emergency Services, according to a statement on the county’s website.

The building will also house the Inland Counties Emergency Medical Agency.

All of those entities are currently in a steel warehouse in Rialto.

“In San Bernardino County, we are constantly in battle against the weather and natural disasters,” said Dawn Rowe, board chair, in the statement.  “The Valley Communications Center will provide the space and the technology to bring all of our local, state, federal and volunteer allies together in one place.”

The $125 million facility, which will include a 200-foot communications tower, will be paid for with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. It is expected to open in October 2025.

The facility will accommodate up to 454 emergency planners and responders, according to the statement
