A groundbreaking ceremony was held recently at the future site of the West End Regional Navigation Center in Fontana.
The 200-bed facility at 1109 Jasmine St. will shelter homeless individuals until they can be moved into permanent housing, according to a statement on San Bernardino County’s website.
It will be a low-barrier facility, meaning its residents may keep their personal possessions and it will not have strict curfews.
Residents will also have access to behavioral health services, medical care, case management, transportation, and permanent housing placement.
Estimated cost of the project is $20 million.
“No single county or city can address this challenge alone,” said Dawn Rowe, chair of the county board of supervisors, in the statement. “Meaningful progress will require coordinated regional efforts and a shared commitment to addressing homelessness.”
The center is being developed by the county and is expected to be ready in early 2007. Chino, Fontana, Montclair, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Rialto and Upland are the partner cities, according to the statement.
