Construction has begun on a 30-unit housing complex in San Bernardino for homeless veterans.
The $28 million project at 1351 N. E St. broke ground March 25 and is expected to be completed in March 2027, said Penny Sachs, development and communications manager for U.S. VETS Inland Empire, the project’s developer.
San Bernardino alone has an estimated 500 veterans either living on the streets or in a shelter within the city, according to Sachs,
“It’s very important that we get those people into housing, for their sake and to help clean up the city,” Sachs said.
The three-story building will have 21 one-bedroom and nine-two-bedroom units. Located at North E Street and 13th Street, the project will be built on land donated by Holocaust survivor John Boruchin and his wife Dora to the Jewish National Fund, which designated that the property be used to help homeless veterans.
San Bernardino and San Bernardino County provided most of the funding for the project, which will be restricted to veterans and their families, regardless of where they’re living, that earn 50 percent or less than the area’s median income, Sachs said.
