Keep the “human” in Human Resources

On this week of “Professionals of the Inland Empire (PIE)”, host John Tulac, an international business attorney, is joined by David Bailey, an expert in industrial recruiting, and Maria Acosta, a human resources consultant.

With 22 years of experience in manufacturing and distribution recruiting, David Bailey focuses on practical roles like engineering and maintenance. He highlights a significant talent shortage in manufacturing, driven by a declining interest in these careers and increased demand due to automation. However, he notes a recent shift towards manufacturing careers among younger generations, offering viable, debt-free options with potential for high salaries (e.g., maintenance technicians earning six-figures). He stresses the need for more apprenticeship and internal training programs to address skill gaps and underemployment among recent graduates, many of whom are working non-technical jobs despite holding degrees.

Maria Acosta, who transitioned from higher education to HR, provides fractional HR services to small-to-medium enterprises through Workforce Consultants. These services include on-site and remote support, audits, and compliance checks, allowing businesses to ensure organizational health and compliance while focusing on revenue. She emphasizes the complexity of California’s employment laws, which vary by employee size, and the critical need for proactive HR management to navigate legal liabilities and protect employee rights.

Both experts acknowledge the growing role of AI in candidate screening but emphasize the continued importance of human interaction in recruitment. Concerns include the potential for AI-driven decisions to lead to discriminatory practices and the necessity for employers to comply with complex laws regarding employee classifications, wage transparency, and protected classes to prevent lawsuits. Thorough documentation and adherence to legal frameworks are essential for mitigating risks.

The PIE podcast aims to showcase Inland Empire professional talent, foster local economic development, and highlight the Provisors networking community. Catch the full show on YouTube @ProfessionalsofInlandEmpire.
